🎡 February 3rd, 1959 was for many, "the day the music died", when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper were all killed. Their plane took off a little after 1 AM from Clear Lake, Iowa, when a cold North-East wind gave way to a blinding snow storm which drastically reduced visibility. Encased in a sea of snow with only white below, pilot Roger Peterson seemed to become disoriented and flew the plane into the ground. One wing hit the frozen earth and the small plane tumbled over and over, killing the three musicians and the plane's young pilot.

Jimi met Roger Mayer for the third time and he invited Roger to go along to the studio session at Olympic Studios after the concert.

After a 2:00 intro segment, the show starts. There are dropouts and gaps in the sound. This makes for a frustrating listening experience. Also, the crowd near the taper keeps yelling for people to "SIT DOWN". The dropouts in sound seem to be remedied by "The Wind Cries Mary". "Little Wing" is dedicated to the people in the back "who can't see". The sound is rough, but fairly typical for a 1968 audience tape. Before "Purple Haze", Jimi refers to his difficulties with the "amplifier scene".Support: Albert King; John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers.
