RAT Subterranean News (19-30 April) review by Marvin Grafton:
‘....Out next, San Francisco’s Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin... Not only do you dig listening to her but you dig seeing her. She really trips on her sound. When they did ‘Piece Of My Heart’ no one could sit still, including all the people who usually wind up at press parties and don’t dig rock…WOW!
Joni Mitchell, then Buddy Guy lent their personal tributes and sounds to the occasion... Next the Space man himself, Jimi Hendrix. It was the first time I had ever seen him. He is in another galaxy, another dimension. Hendrix is from another time period. The sound he gets from his equipment puts him in the Electronic Wizard class as well as the fine musician class. The musicians playing with him were even digging Hendrix. Their faces showed that they were really being ‘turned on’ by ‘Their leader.”
After the Space Man, came B.B. King again, this time with Elvin Bishop and Paul Butterfield. Also jumping along were Sonny Friedman on drums, and James Tony on organ... It was truly a rock show not to be equaled for a long time. And so, at 5 A.M., their tribute ended.”

Buddy Guy: “I saw a kid come in with a big hat and ease up to the stage with a tape recorder. And some amateur camera man (D.A. Pennebaker)... They were yelling about him being Jimi Hendrix. I was just doing what I had to do, and he said, ‘Pay them no mind. I’ve been trying to catch you...”
