🎊 July, 16

🎊 1967.
Photo session with David Sygall at the Warwick Hotel, 65 West 54th Str, NYC. Date unknown, between 13 & 22 July 1967, likely on 15 or 16 July.

David Sygall: “Jimi was a very open friendly and giving guy. For instance during that first shoot up in his room, he asked me if I was hungry. At the time hamburgers went for $0.75. He ordered me a $5.00 room service hamburger, which seemed unbelievable to me, but was typical of the kind of generous and friendly person he was. As I was getting ready to leave the shoot, he gave me a pair of his boots! They were suede boots with little frills at the knee. This was the very first time we had met, and he gave me clothing he had actually worn. He had performed in Berkeley wearing those boots. I wore those boots whenever I was developing pictures of Hendrix in the darkroom for years".

🔚 Jimi quits the Monkees tour after this show.

Noel: “The tour manager nagged Jimi to tone down the act. Jimi acquiesced at the Forest Hills gig by turning off completely. Usually intolerant of his on-stage moodies, this time I agreed with his tactic. We were told to get off the tour, or else. . . Or else what? Get thrown off the tour? Second prize was being asked to stay on. Our publicists made up a classic press release to the effect that the Daughters of the American Revolution had demanded our withdrawal to save their daughters from ruin. Couldn’t have put it better myself. We knew for certain that we were off the tour when we were moved from a posh hotel to a crappy hotel. Jeffery was livid, and stomped off in a huff to work on his Spanish clubs, boutiques, real estate, tax plans. Publicity wise, getting off the tour did us a lot of good. Getting thrown off the Monkees tour was as good as not being invited to the White House as far as credibility went. For us, exile to New York was a relief. Audiences there inspired us to get stoned and belt it out. Forget the Monkees. We could jam with Spencer Davis and The Who, play strip poker with Keith Moon and his assorted ladies”.

Jimi, Mitch and Noel spend the day at Lauro Verde Beach in Palma, Spain. Home videos recorded by Noel, are later presented in the Southbank Documentary in October 1989.
