Eddie about ‘Are You Experienced’:
“The structure of the song was recorded first, with Jimi’s rhythm guitar, Mitch’s drums and Noel’s bass recorded forward. Jimi had practised the opening riff at home, so he would know what it would sound like backward. At Olympic, we experimented with the sounds and placements to see what would work best. Jimi played octaves on the wonderful, old, out-of-tune, upright piano at Olympic. The piano sound, reminiscent of a bell tolling, was an essential part of the basic rhythm track.”
Chas: “Mitch had started to get uptight because Jimi would want him to play all of the different rhythms we had discovered by playing tapes backward at the flat. We’d play around with backward tapes to hear the rhythm, which was actually the drums backward. Jimi would want Mitch to play that rhythm.”

The JHE flew from J.F. Kennedy airport, New York City, to Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Noel: “We got to the airport with minutes to spare, I ran for the flight, but Jimi and Mitch refused to, so they missed the flight. Jimi disappeared and we were late getting to the airport the next day. Arriving with minutes to spare, we were told we could still make the plane if we ran. I ran and got on board. Jimi and Mitch were too groovy to run and ended up in Virginia Beach after changing planes five times.”
