Concert (two shows - 18.15 and 20.30).
Accommodation: “Royal Station Hotel”, Neville Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Noel: “In Newcastle we met pleasantly intelligent, but coldly determined people like bouncer Dave, who beat up eight guys after they had axed his head in and before he walked to hospital. During the show one guy jumped twenty feet from the balcony to the stage only to be lobbed off by a roadie wielding a mic’ stand.“

🐟 On this day, Hendrix signed a contract for $12,500 to perform at the Fillmore East in New York. Most importantly, the Fillmore East would serve as the venue for the recording of a live album by the guitarist. In recent weeks, Hendrix had determined that the most expedient way to resolve his obligation to Capitol Records per the 1968 PPX legal settlement would be to deliver a live album to the label. “The Fillmore gigs were put together very last minute,” recalls Hendrix road manager Gerry Stickells. “The Fillmore East and West were trend spots and Bill Graham was the trend guy. It would be like a major act doing a live album in a club now, compared to a stadium. “

🐟 Return of the Experience in NY, which allows Jimi to have a few days off.
Several record stores in Britain refuse to sell the double album Electric Ladyland because of the controversial cover photo featuring 19 nude women. The disc will eventually be wrapped in Kraft paper and put on sale.

Jimi wanted another concept based on the photos taken by Linda Eastman on Aug 7, 1968 in Central Park. He had designed the project for the cover himself but he was not retained by the English label which, for probable reasons of business, judged the sleeve with the naked women more salesworthy ...

🐟 London; rehearsals. Noel telephoned Chas, went up to London, did rehearsals until 5 with Jimi. Noel was given a six-string bass, probably the Danelectro he was photographed playing on stage during their show at Olympia only 12 days later.
Noel: “A Burns six-string was suggested. But the strings were too close together for my fingers. I went back the next day and Jimi was surprised I had remembered the chord sequence [to ‘Hey Joe’]. I don’t read music, but I’ve got a good memory. We tried a few drummers, me and this coon from America. Yes that’s what I used to call him. Jimi loved that – he really dug it. He loved me y’know - and I loved him.
We jammed drummerless for a few days while we checked out different drummers. This was good because we got to know each other a bit and learned to understand each other's guitar style without immediately having to incorporate a third musician. I was enjoying experimenting on bass. Never having played one before was very liberating in its way.”

Noel: “In Texas, we asked for a drink and were told the gig was ‘dry.’ That was it. Forget it! We flat out refused to play without a drink. Finally a police car pulled up outside the gig and we were taken out. We were getting a bit nervous. Texas had a terrifying reputation for locking you away for life for possession of a joint. The boot opened and inside was as close to a full bar as you could imagine”.
