Noel: “November 30 is the date Jimi nearly missed. Mitch and I caught the plane and Jimi never showed. We were met in Detroit by people from Warners and taken to the hotel. Jeffery then phoned; “Jimi has freaked out” he says and is refusing to come. I don’t know what Michael said to Jimi but it must have been heavy, for Jimi decides to come at the last minute, though they have to hire a Learjet to get him there on time. In spite of it all, the show is a good one. Probably played well out of sheer relief.”

🚗 Noel returned to the Birdland, but there was no one there, so he went to the ANIM offices, 39 Gerrard Street, London W1, where Michael Jeffery offered him the job as bass guitarist.
Noel: “On the 30th I turned up again as requested and no one was there. Panic! I’d been given the Anim Ltd. office address on Gerrard Street. I literally ran there, and did a quick hype on the first person I saw. It was Michael Jeffery, Chas’ partner and the Animal’s manager. He just said, “ ‘It’s okay. You got the audition. Move to London.’ I nearly fainted with relief. I’d been too depressed to allow myself to get excited before then.”
“…suddenly we had a gig. A tour even… - and we didn’t even have a drummer.
…We jammed drummer less for a few days while we checked out various drummers. This was good because we got to know each other a bit and learned to understand each other’s guitar style without immediately having to incorporate a third musician. I was enjoying experimenting on bass. Never having played one before was very liberating in its way.”
↪ Chas tells Eric Clapton about Jimi: “I bumped into Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce at the Cromwellian Club, who had just formed the Cream at the time, and told them about this guy who I’d brought from America. They said I had to bring him down to the Regent Polytechnic, because Cream were playing there the next night.”

🚗 The Experience fly from New York to Salt Lake City, Utah and book into the Newhouse Hotel. In his hotel room, Jimi Hendrix writes the intricate liner notes to Warner Bros. for the production of the Electric Ladyland. (See the liner notes from the 1997 remastered edition of Electric Ladyland for complete note transcription). The Jimi Hendrix Experience perform at the Langoon Opera House with support from Soft Machine.

In addition, guitarist Larry Lee made several attempts at achieving a finished master for his composition “Mastermind.”

After checking they travel to the festival site where Steve Clackson (The Sunday Mirror) interviews Hendrix again for his upcoming September 20 feature. Prior to performing Jimi is interviewed, while walking to the stage by French television. Also performing on August 30th at the Isle Of Wight Festival Of Festival are Good News, Kris Kristofferson, Ralph McTell, Heaven, Free, Donovan, Pentangle, The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen, and Richie Havens.
