Noel: “The plush velvet comfort of the Philharmonic Hall was a dream come true... The acoustics were impeccable. The subtlest nuance carried distortion-free to the furthest corners... It was sobering to follow the New York Brass Quintet and harpsichordist Fernando Valenti, and difficult to adjust to the thought that every vibration of every note would be heard!”
1966. 🎸 London, Greek Street - Rehearsals The venue for this rehearsal is unconfirmed, but it was definitely in a club, possibly “Les Cousins” (on number 49), “Zebra Club” (number 18), or “The Kilt Club” (number unknown).
1967. 🎸 London ↪ Dunstable, California Ballroom, Whipsnade Road, Bedfordshire, England, JHE Concert (50 minutes between 20.00 and 24.00). Support: Modes Mode; Canal Street Philharmonic. Noel: "We were done by 11:00 pm. so I nipped back to London, picked up Chas and headed for the studio." “A much bigger problem was boredom. Since we could no longer go out and cool off between shows, we had no option but to sit around in dressing rooms with nothing to do but get smashed. In Dunstable, you weren’t even allowed to drink. Just what was one supposed to do, sitting on a wooden bench breathing the stale air in an eight-by-ten- foot windowless box with wall-to-wall hangers-on? You might have one horrid toilet and/or basin with a cold tap (dripping). You’d certainly have peeling paint speckled with graffiti and who knows what else, cracked concrete floors with antique cigarette butts, and a ceiling cascading with condensation.”

John Carpenter (columnist): “Jimi Hendrix is in town recording! Monday night someone stole two guitars from his station wagon parked outside; later on others stole two more from his Benedict Canyon digs. One of the guitars was especially made, had a great deal of sentimental value, and was worth a lot to him. No questions asked if you can get them to he who uses them so well. ↪ Noel Redding went to the office of Harold Davison Limited to enquire about the auditions for the New Animals, he said he had seen advertised in Melody Maker, he was told to attend the Birdland club the next day, a club not far from the Scotch Of St. James.

1968. 🎸 Record Plant, New York City. New York, USA, JHE. Noel: “Speeding and coked up we worked until ten the next morning. We blew the next day’s session, as a result.” Later session that day cancelled. Noel: “We were so done in by our previous marathon session we have to cancel this one..., we didn’t get up until 6pm."

🎸 New York City, Scene Club, NY Noel: “Jam with Mitch and Larry Coryell. The words day and night had no meaning. Day was whenever we happened to be awake. I'd pry my eyelids open with a snort of coke just in time to go all-night jamming with friends like Robert Wyatt and Larry Coryell.”
1969. 🎸 Hit Factory, New York Studio Recording. Jimi returned to the recording studio for the first time in nearly three months. The guitarist was accompanied by his expanded ensemble Gypsy Sun & Rainbows, as well as engineer Eddie Kramer. Jimi had readied a slate of promising new material and looked to make progress on his next studio album. A number of recordings from this session were later issued on disc. The two most prominent were “Message To The Universe”, now a part of South Saturn Delta and “Izabella” from the box set The Jimi Hendrix Experience. While no longer in print, two other recordings from this session have been previously released. An edited version of “Easy Blues” was part of the 1980 compilation Nine To The Universe.
1970. 🎸 Jimi participates in a series of interviews at his suite at the Londonderry Hotel. Among the interviewees include Gillian Saich (New Musical Express, September 5), Bob Partridge (Record Mirror, September 19), and Norman Joplin (Music Now, September 12). Hendrix applies for a working visa at the Swedish Embassy in London so that he can perform there in the coming weeks. Later that night Jimi is joined by Steven Stills and Billy Cox at The Speakeasy.
🎸 1967. Gaslight Café, NYC. Jimi jams again with John Hammond Jr and His Screaming Nighthawks and Eric Clapton.
John Hammond tells this evening: “I had set up a small trio and we played together in the same club, The Gaslight. There were Charles Otis on drums, Lee Collins on bass. I met Eric Clapton in 1965 on tour in England when he was playing with John Mayall. Eric was in town with Cream and Jimi had just finished the tour with the Monkees. They came to the Gaslight at the same time and we played together every night for a week. It was a small club that could hold only 60 people at the same time. So many people who were on the show over the years came up to me and said, They had seen me with Eric and Jimi (laughs). Yes, we were there. 🎸 1967. Houston Studios, Los Angeles, California. The Experience are in the middle of their first U.S. tour. Before heading back to the east coast, they stop in and record an acetate of The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam’s Dice.
Noel: "Did new number, I played 12-string with wah-wah" Chas: “...Houston Studios. I had never recorded there myself. I booked three days there because I was told it was a state of the art studio. But it was dire. The place was like a rehearsal studio compared to Olympic. Los Angeles was so far behind at that time. I had spoken to Jimi about ideas for ‘Burning Of The Midnight Lamp’ up in San Francisco. One of the ideas we spoke about was using female voices again. I even lined up three girls from L.A. who had been groupies of the Animals to sing”.
