🍒 1967.
Star Hotel (pub), Croydon, Surrey, London
Although a small club it was part of the ‘bread & butter’ circuit that many well known R&B ‘rock’ acts of the day played.
Concert (60 minutes)
Noel was probably using Chas’ 4-string Gibson EB2 bass.
Audience: sold out
Songs: Stone Free // Hey Joe (Billy Roberts) // Red House // Johnny B. Goode (Chuck Berry) // Are You Experienced // and others – “They did not play Purple Haze”

Keith Aldridge (local guitarist): “The Star was really busy that night... the stage was not more than a foot and a half off the ground and there was a piano over in the corner.
They’ve got an alcove/French window with the stage slightly to the right. Well, they brought Hendrix through that window, there was no way they could get him through the hall.
Before he’d even played, you noticed how impressive looking Hendrix was. I always thought of blues guitarists as little men, especially after seeing Buddy Guy. But Hendrix was an ex-Yankee paratrooper and he looked massive.

They were basically playing stuff off the first album; a really nice bluesy version of ‘Rock Me Baby’; I think he did a Buddy Guy song which might have been ‘The First Time I Met The Blues’, covers like ‘Fire’, but mainly slow blues like ‘Red House’.
