London W1, 43 Upper Berkeley Street flat - Interview conducted by Keith Altham for New Musical Express ('Hendrix IS out of this world' - published 15 April).

Mitch Mitchell's hair is re-permed by Gary Craze at Sweeney's, London.

Mitch: Noel said there was girl he knew that could perm my hair and it would save money, rather than going to a hairdresser. After she had finished, it was a complete mess. I ended up having to go to the hairdresser anyway.

Jimi: “S.O.S. Same old stuff (?).”

Neville: “Place very good, audience good, Jimi was in very bad mood, played badly, did short time. Everybody disappointed.”

Anonymous: “I was at the Hendrix show. Great opening acts, except Soft Machine, A bloody bore. Jimi did not like the audience yelling for Purple Haze. ‘That song would be more of a drag for me than you’. After 4 or 5 tunes he blew out his amps. Did not return to the stage and listened to a 20 minute drum-bass solo. Was a great day of music nonetheless.”

Jimi began this session joined by an unidentified drummer and together the two players recorded a quick rendition of “Bleeding Heart”. This was followed by three takes of “Midnight Lightning.” Bassist Billy Cox joined the session and s the tandem ran through four takes of “Bleeding Heart,” the later of which was flagged as the master and later transferred to Jimi’s own Electric Lady Studios where additional guitar and a new drum part were overdubbed by Jimi and Mitch Mitchell. Although Jimi never fully completed “Bleeding Heart” prior to his death, it has since been issued as part of First Rays Of The New Rising Sun.
