One Rainy Wish
Jimi: “The piccolo sound on ‘If 6 Was 9’ was actually a Moroccan flute I bought for two shillings. You can get that same sound out of a guitar. We’ve got a gadget call the Octavia that we use on a song called “One Rainy Wish.” It boosts the guitar twice as high.”
Chas: “I was very keen on that song from the very first moment I heard him play it to me . Jimi recorded three guitars for that song - not counter playing as he had done with ‘The Wind Cries Mary.’ These guitar parts each picked up where the other one left off. We had some trouble recording it, as there were originally some gaps between the notes, which caused Noel to struggle a bit with the tempo, but it all came together nicely in the end.”
Eddie: “Jimi would sometimes say, ‘Make the guitar sound green or purple and I would adjust the sound accordingly. he would say, ‘Yeah, man, that’s it!’ To me green suggested reverb, while I always interpreted purple, a more regal colour, to mean rich distortion.
Roger Mayer: "I spent a lot of time with Jimi privately, hanging out and talking. We were normally using colours to describe the sounds.
Noel: "Did 1 number again today, Graham [Nash] came around."
