โช Looking to get something new to market following their debut โHey Joe,โ Chas Chandler brought The Experience to DeLane Lea Studios in London to commence work on their next songs. This session included the basic track for โPurple Haze,โ which was recorded in merely four hours. Additional recordings including โThe Wind Cries Mary,โ โ51st Anniversary,โ โThe Wind Cries Maryโ and โBurning Of The Midnight Lampโ were also completed. Jimi later stated 'The Purple Haze,' was about a dream he had and that he was walking under the sea.
โช After a day full of recording at DeLane Lea Studios, The Jimi Hendrix Experience performed two shows at the venerable Bag OโNails. Hendrix continued to make waves in the local music scene, and whenever possible a large group of fellow musicians would attend The Experienceโs shows.
In concert, Jimi sometimes substituted lyrics for comic effect; โscuse me while I kiss the skyโ was rendered โscuse me while I kiss this guyโ (while gesturing towards his drummer Mitch). A galaxy of stars flocked in to see the Experience perform: Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bill Wyman, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, Eric Clapton, Lulu, Donovan, Eric Burdon, Georgie Fame, Geno Washington and Denny Laine to mention just a few.
โช Mike Ledgerwood in his review for Disc & Music Echo (21 January) concluded: โIt was certainly a night to remember. Jimi did two spots of powerful, full-blooded blues which produced some amazing sounds and guitar gymnastics. He looks set to become one of the brightest stars of โ67.โ After the two sets, Roger Mayer met Jimi for the first time.

Chas Chandler: "Purple Haze took 4 hours to record, which at that time was a lot a of money"
Mitch: "Jimi came in and hummed a riff and showed Noel the chord changes. I listened to it and went, OK, Let's do it. We got it on the third take as I recall"
Chas Chandler: "Jimi and I were striving for a sound and just kept going back in 2 hours at a time, trying to achieve it. A lot of the background sound on Purple Haze is actually a recording being fed back into the studio through the earphones held around the microphone, moving them in and out to create a weird echo".
"The song 51st Anniversary is a good example of Jimi just sitting around the apartment, singing and playing his guitar. I would sit across from him and say, "That's good" or "Change it to something like this". These were pre-studio edits, if you like. Then we would go together with the band and rehearse the song"
